The political geography of New Hampshire consists primarily of cities, towns and counties. The coding system used in NH GRANIT is the Federal Information Processing Standard or FIPS Code for states, counties and minor civil divisions (MCD) comprised of towns, unincorporated places and cities. The FIPS Codes consist of a two digit state code, a three digit county code and a three digit MCD code as follows:
STATE | COUNTY | TOWN/CITY |
33 New Hampshire | 001 Belknap | 005 Alton |
010 Barnstead | ||
etc. | ||
005 Carroll | 005 Alstead | |
001 Chesterfield | ||
etc. |
Application of this code can usually be simplified by omitting the first two characters, since most applications concern only New Hampshire. Please click here to download a MS Excel table containing codes for all NH political subdivisions.
