Description:

Abstract:

This dataset is a combination of point data, identifying the entrance location of key destinations, and polygons, identifying significant retail areas containing numerous potential destinations. The data was developed by the nine Regional Planning Agencies based on a common methodology, with input and review from staff at the NH Department of Environmental Services. Certain types of destinations were identified for all communities; these included: Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools, Higher Education Facilities, Municipal Offices, Libraries (public and private), Community Facilities, Grocery Stores, Athletic/Recreation Facilities, Post Offices, Retail/Shopping Areas, Public Transportation Access Point, and Hospitals. Additional destinations were identified when significant to a community; these could include such places as Smaller Markets, Places of Worship, Restaurant, Funeral Homes, Performing Art Centers, Trail Access Points, Town Greens, and Large-scale Event Facilities. Destinations are identified separately by type. Descriptions and additional information is provided for some data.

Purpose:

This data is useful in municipal and regional planning and transportation planning and projects, and can be used to evaluate the distribution of development within a community or region.

The data is checked for errors and checked for positional accuracy based on 1998 USGS Digital Ortho Quadrangles, 2003 NAIP imagery and/or USGS Topographic Quadrangles. The data is spatially clean having no topological errors or other kind. The data was reviewed by both the regional planning associations and NHDES.

Nashua Region Planning Commission (NRPC) Polygons were derived from assessing data, aerial imagery and existing local plans. Areas were designated as destination polygons based on the Sprawl Indicators criteria.

Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC) Retail/Shopping areas were reselected from RPC's Land Use dataset and from the 1998 Land Use dataset of Rockingham County as produced by the CICEET funded Land Use Change Study done by GRANIT, Complex Systems Research Center, UNH. Features were plotted on aerial photo base maps for staff review and comment. Additions and corrections were made per staff comments.

Southern New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission (SNHRPC) The individual towns within the region were sent a copy of the printed map of the last version of sprawl indicators to make changes to the existing or add any new indicators to the data. Planner from SNHPC has also set up meetings to discuss and map the new indicators with community planners from the individual towns. The 2004 color aerial photos where used to map the exact location of the marked indicator. The data is also georeferenced and is also attributed with information.

Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission (UVLSRPC) Destinations were digitized by UVLSRPC based on 1992 or 1998 Digital Orthophoto Quads (DOQ's), from the US Geological Survey and the USDA Forest Service, 1:12,000, distributed by GRANIT. Other destinations were GPS'd by UVLSRPC, funded by NH Office of Emergency Management.
